Teacher

Mike has been teaching guitar successfully for over 30 years, both privately, in schools and in music workshops – teaching students of all ages and levels, from complete beginner to professional.  His vast experience of live and studio work enables him to offer his students a comprehensive understanding of playing and performance.

His teaching covers all styles including Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Classical; together with improvisation and music theory.

Lessons are currently provided at Mike’s home in Budleigh Salterton where he has a fully equipped professional teaching studio, or online via Skype.

Karen Akroyd (Centre Manager, British Academy of New Music) says “Mike demonstrates excellence as a teacher; he is able to understand the needs of the student and differentiate clearly to create individual learning plans for each student.  He has patience and sensitivity, but is also able to communicate the importance of self management and practice in his students.”

Mike’s approach to teaching

Mike says:-

“Learning to play the guitar today is not like learning to play most other instruments. There are a multitude of books/videos/tapes teaching different styles, techniques and approaches, many of which are too difficult for complete beginners. Each student has different requirements so my approach is to identify their objectives and work with them to create a personalised programme for learning.  I use a wide selection of carefully selected books and other published teaching materials as well as material created by me to meet the needs of individual students. Making music is fun, so it is important that the learning process is equally enjoyable”.
